This
special-edition bat is a replica of the Louisville Slugger originally
created in 1983 to commemorate one of the most unusual
events in baseball history—the George Brett “Pinetar” incident
in Yankee’s Stadium.
On July 24th, 1983, third baseman George Brett homered off reliever
Goose Gossage to put the Royals ahead 5-4.
After Brett crossed home plate, Yankee’s manager Billy Martin
protested that pinetar, a substance that enhances a batter’s
grip, extended too far up Brett’s bat handle. After conferring,
the umpires ruled Brett “out,” negating
his home run.
Bret’s enraged charge from the dugout is one of the most
memorable scenes in Major League baseball history.
On Appeal, the Commissioner reversed the umpires’ ruling
allowing Brett’s home run to stand and the remainder of the
game was later replayed, turning a Royals loss into a win.
Mutual Mortgage is proud to offer this limited-edition “Pinetar” bat,
personally signed by George Brett, to clients who secure a mortgage
or home equity loan. Additional “Pinetar” bats are
available for $50 with proceeds to the Keith Worthington Chapter,
ALS Association of Greater Kansas City. |
